7400-series integrated circuits are integrated circuits that implement simple logic operations. They’re small-scale integration (SSI) and dual-inline package chips.

The ones we use have 14 pins: starting with the notch on the left end, then from left to right, below the notch are pins 1 to 7, above the notch are pins 14 to 8. Pin 14 should always be connected to the VCC (+5 V) and pin 7 to the ground (0 V).

The chips are inserted into the “valley” of a breadboard. In practice, we must always connect each chip to a and to ground. When simulating in Logisim, this isn’t necessary. Remember to use a tweezer type tool to take the chips out to prevent pin damage.
