A breadboard helps us build simple circuits. A useful rule of thumb is that each row is a different node. The exception is with the columns at the sides of the board, which are connected in series.
When attaching chips that require multiple nodes connected to it (like the 7400-series ICs or op amps), we can attach over the valley:
