groups:

  • formally — like work groups
  • informally — like “you and your friends study everyday after class together”
  • for larger groups — usually easier to implement with a divide-and-conquer approach
  • types of tasks
    • additive tasks — like swarm tasks (organising tables in classroom into 3 rows)
    • disjunctive tasks
    • conjunctive tasks — like Olympics relay races

roles

  • role ambiguity - unclear what you’re supposed to do and how you’re supposed to contribute
  • cohesiveness
    • results in ppl wanting to participate or engage more
    • toughness of initiation — like being a uoft engineering student
  • consequences of cohesiveness
    • high cohesion may result in rebellion

There are two main types of engineering teams:

  • Cross-functional teams integrate colleagues of different expertise and background.
  • Within-function teams have colleagues all of a similar expertise.
