Printed circuit boards are built with layers of different types. The stack-up arranges the multiple layers of a PCB.
Types and terminology
Plane layers provide important functions in PCB, where all layers can access.
- The power layer provides power throughout the board.
- The ground layer provides a ground connection for internal circuits.
Connections between layers are made with vias.
Surface layer
The surface layer has copper features and protective materials on top of the laminate and copper. Modern PCBs are double-sided, so the top and bottom both have components.
The solder mask is the top layer of a PCB, used to define the locations where solder will be applied. This is why PCBs are green! The silkscreen consist of the letters, numbers, or logos on the board.
