The Windows Display Driver Model is the GPU driver architecture for Windows drivers. It works for Windows versions post-Vista. WDDM is able to do:

  • GPU resource scheduling. WDDM supports pre-emptive scheduling.
  • Virtual memory management for the GPU.
  • Reduced crashes with separation of concerns — there’s both a user-mode and kernel-mode component.
  • Tight integration with DirectX.
  • Timeout detection and recovery, for system stability.
  • Multiple monitor support.
