Magnetic flux

Magnetic flux is a flux integral, the amount of magnetic field that pierces the surface. We measure in webers ($Wb$, $T\cdot m^2$).

Formula

The net flux through a surface is given by:

$${\Phi }_B={\iint }_S\vec{B}\cdot d\vec{A}$$

where $\overrightarrow{dA}$ is perpendicular to the differential area $dA$.

In general, we can change the magnetic flux through a coil by:

• Changing the magnitude $B$ of the magnetic field within the coil
• Changing the total area of the coil that lies within the magnetic field
• Change the angle between the direction of the field and the plane of the coil
