Vacuum tubes were historically used everywhere transistors are used now. Prof Kosteski says these are “quite specialised now”.
They were used to rectify and amplify signals but they scaled poorly so telecommunications applications needed thousands of tubes and they burned out often. Since semiconductor devices (diodes, transistors) functioned the same, scaled better, and were more reliable, vacuum tubes fell out of fashion.
