I used Notion for about a year, after starting out at UofT ECE. I’m a huge proponent of using some software to track your life and note-taking for self-improvement, and Notion was a great place to start.

I ended up switching some content to Obsidian right after my first-year, though. There were a few minor frictions that really built up over time, so the switch didn’t take much convincing.

  • Notion uses tree-based pages instead of an unstructured format, so taking quick notes was needlessly overcomplicated
  • Notion is engineered really well, but some customisation options, like choosing English locale, being set in stone compared to Obsidian was getting on my nerves

That said, Notion is free if you’re a student (just sign up with your student email) so use whatever you like. There’s a place for both in my life, too.
