Motors are devices that convert electrical power to mechanical power or heat. They’re rated in real power (kW or HP) based on the mechanical power they provide, i.e., the strength of the motor.
Motors also draw reactive power, so a power factor rating is also given and an efficiency rating.
This is always less than 100% due to losses within the motor. They can be thought of as an electromagnet, spinning under the presence of a magnetic field.
