In electromagnetism, the method of images describes an approach to a broad class of problems, where we have a charge (or distribution) above an infinite, perfectly conducting plate.
This follows from the uniqueness theorems of Laplace’s equation. The basic idea is that if we have a problem with a certain set of conditions, and we formulate a different problem with the same conditions, the solution to the different problem will uniquely solve the original problem.
