The STARR method is a framework for behavioural interviews.1
- Situation — provide context, set the stage. What happened? Who was involved? What was the main issue?
- Task — discuss my role in the situation. What responsibility did I take to address the issue? Was I assigned the task or did I take initiative?
- Action — describe how the challenge was overcame or situation was faced. What did I do? How did others respond? What happened next? Even if the situation happened in a team setting, use “I”.
- Result — what was the outcome as a result of the actions? What did I learn?
- Relate — show how this experience is relevant to the position I’m interviewing for. This makes it easier for the hiring manager to envision what it would be like to be in the role.
