Internet Relay Chat (or just IRC) is a super old instant messaging system. The idea is that there are different IRC networks (like Discord servers) with their own channels. To send messages in channels, you’d have to /join each channel individually.
I spent so much time on IRC in high school, because many FOSS communities (like Wikipedia) had a big messaging community on networks like Freenode, then migrated to Libera Chat.
